4 signs it’s time to upgrade your water heater

Replacing your aging water heater before it fails can help you avoid the hassles of cold showers, interrupted chores and costly emergency repairs.

Here’s how to tell when you should consider an upgrade:

  • Rumbling or popping noises: If you hear strange noises coming from your water heater, it’s often a sign that mineral deposits have built up inside the tank, especially as it nears the end of its lifespan. Traditional water heaters typically last about 10-15 years, while tankless models can last about 20 years.
  • Rust or discolored water: Rusty water coming out of your faucets could point to a deteriorating water heater. Visible rust on the tank and valves may also indicate corrosion inside the system. If you notice these signs, don’t hesitate to call a plumbing professional. Spire has a network of natural gas contractors who can help.
  • Hot water doesn’t last as long: Another common sign of a struggling water heater is running out of hot water sooner than usual or noticing inconsistent water temperatures. Sediment buildup, aging burners or worn heating components can all reduce efficiency over time, making it harder for the unit to keep up with everyday use.
  • Water around the tank: Notice water on the floor near your heater? Don't ignore it. While small leaks around fittings or valves can sometimes be repaired, leaking from the tank itself often means a replacement is needed. It’s also important to make sure the water is actually coming from the water heater and not nearby items or appliances like an air conditioner, water softener or a humidifier.
