Children’s Mercy Kansas City teddy bear clinic eases fears for kids

A stay in the hospital can be scary, stressful and confusing for kids. A special clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas City focuses on changing that -- by using teddy bears to educate young patients and making hospitals a friendlier place to stay.

At the clinic, each participating pediatric patient received a new teddy bear that they took to stations to receive some of the same treatments they do as a hospital patient. Stations included:

  • health checkups
  • physical therapy
  • CT scans
  • blood draws
  • and even a quick surgery

With more than 100 teddy bears donated by Spire, a team of Spire employees assisted with the teddy bear clinic as part of their Day for Good volunteer hours while Children's Mercy Kansas City staff demonstrated how the various procedures are performed in a safe, friendly environment.
