Natural gas infrastructure supports the Mid-Continent’s AI-driven power demand

The Midwest and Mid-Continent are emerging as among the nation’s fastest-growing data center hubs due to less expensive land and a diverse energy mix. In an LDC Gas Forums blog, Annette Anderson, Spire Midstream Director of Marketing, shares how industry collaboration and natural gas infrastructure – including pipelines and gas storage facilities – can help the region’s electric utilities address growing data center needs and ensure a more reliable power grid for all customers.

Giving back and doing good in our communities

Spire Midstream team members recently participated in its annual Day for Good at Kids’ Meals in Houston – a nonprofit focused on ending childhood hunger by delivering free, healthy meals to area preschool-aged children and providing their families with support and resources. Several employees volunteered by packing lunches for local kids. Spire’s Day for Good provides employees with paid time off to volunteer at a nonprofit of their choice, and is one of the ways the company supports its communities.

What we’re reading

U.S. Energy Information Administration, Short-Term Energy Outlook
In its latest outlook, the U.S. EIA projects the Henry Hub natural gas price to average $3.90/MMBtu in 2026, a decrease from previous forecasts. Lower natural gas prices largely reflect the expectation that U.S. natural gas production will be higher than previously forecast, leading to more natural gas in storage compared with the prior forecast. In addition, it is predicted that U.S. natural gas output and demand will both rise to record highs in 2025.

Natural Gas Intelligence, Outlook for Natural Gas
In its seasonal outlook, the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA) cited robust production, steady storage levels and new infrastructure investments as helping to balance rising consumption, even as weather and global market forces present risks. NGSA said permitting-related reforms for storage and pipelines could help the industry meet increasing demand. A key source of demand is the rapid rise of AI-linked data centers.
