Natural gas is an incredibly efficient source of energy. For instance, households that use natural gas for heating, drying and cooking save more than $1,000 a year on average, compared to homes using other energy sources for the same activities.*
As a Spire customer, you may have questions about the different elements of your monthly bill, so you can confidently manage your budget. We’re here to break it down for you.
We're also committed to helping you use energy efficiently in your home. Managing your natural gas usage is the first step in managing your costs—because how much gas you use directly impacts your bill.

What goes into a natural gas bill?
At Spire, we want you to understand the different pieces that go into your monthly bill – and the amount you owe.
Your bill is made up of three kinds of charges: delivery, usage and taxes.
Let’s take a deeper look at what this means for you.
Delivery
- What is it? Delivery covers costs for what we need to safely and reliably run our natural gas system, including the pipes in the ground that deliver energy and the people who work around the clock to make sure the system is operating smoothly no matter the weather.
- Important to know: Delivery rates and regularly reviewed and must be approved by state utility regulators before going into effect on your bill.
Usage
- What is it? Usage is exactly what the name suggests – the charges on your bill that reflect the amount of natural gas you used during your billing cycle. Spire purchases gas at the lowest price possible to help keep bills manageable.
- Important to know: The cost of natural gas is passed on to you with no markup. And in comparing rates across our service territories, natural gas remains the most affordable energy source for heating, water heating and cooking.
Taxes
- What is it? The remaining portion of your bill is the amount of municipal tax or gross receipts tax assessed by the municipality in which you receive service.
- Important to know: This amount is collected and paid directly to the municipality.
The larger the home, the more energy it takes to maintain a cozy temperature
When it’s cold outside, homes with natural gas furnaces and water heaters use more energy than during warmer months
The age and efficiency of your home’s natural gas appliances impacts how much energy you use, too
Insulation blocks chilly, drafty air from your home - so you don’t have to crank up the furnace just to stay comfortable.
