Why your bill may look a little different in the winter

During the colder months, it’s normal to use more energy to keep your home warm while spending more time indoors. That increase in usage is often the reason your bill may be higher compared to other times of the year.

The good news is there are simple things you can do to manage your bill, like changing your furnace filter regularly, installing a smart thermostat or sealing areas around your home where cold air could sneak in.

What factors into your bill

Your natural gas bill is made up of a few key parts – and each one plays a role in bringing energy to your home.

  • Usage: This reflects the amount of natural gas used during your billing cycle. Spire purchases gas at the lowest possible cost and passes it on to you with no markup.
  • Delivery: This covers the work required to maintain and operate the natural gas system. That includes the pipelines that deliver energy to your home and the teams working around the clock to keep everything running smoothly.
  • Taxes: This portion is set by the municipality where you receive service. These local taxes are collected by Spire and paid directly to your city or town.
